SILENT VOICES V 10th Apr 2017

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, Chairwoman of Motherhood and Childhood Supreme Council, and Honorary President of the Women Committee at the Red Crescent Society, the fifth edition of Silent Voices, an exhibition of artworks created by women from the Ewa’a Shelters for Victims of Human Trafficking, was opened to the public yesterday.  Located at The Galleria, on Al Maryah Island from 9th – 13th April, Silent Voices V is presented by Ewa'a Shelters for Victims of Human Trafficking in association with the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF).  In attendance were HE Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development; HE Huda Ebrahim Alkhamis, Founder of Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival; HE Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Minister of State for Tolerance; HE Sara Shuhail; Founder of Ewa'a Shelters for Victims of Human Trafficking; amongst other government officials.

As part of their road to recovery, women from the shelters have spent the last six months taking visual arts workshops led by artists Jennifer Simon, Kate Carter and Isabelle Alves da Silva Neves with several sessions held in the inspirational surroundings of L’Atelier des Arts. A total of 15 women from Ewa’a shelters have created inspiring works of art that tell their individual stories to raise awareness and important funds for Ewa'a Shelters for Victims of Human Trafficking. Each piece of art tells a unique story and is a medium for creative self-expression for the women and child victims of human trafficking. All proceeds from the sale of artworks will support Ewa’a.

H.E. Huda Ebrahim Alkhamis, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) said; “Silent Voices has been a cornerstone of ADMAF’s community arts programme since 2012, demonstrating the importance of visual arts in the rehabilitation of human trafficking survivors. The resulting exhibition epitomises the remarkable strength and determination of each and every individual and shines a light upon a major global issue while reminding those of us more fortunate to be forever thankful.”

H.E. Sara Shuhail, General Director, Ewa’a Shelters for Victims of Human Trafficking, said: “At Ewa’a Shelters, we strongly believe that survivors gain the greatest benefit from their rehabilitation journey through visual art. In collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF), we have witnessed its positive impact, how it changes a survivor’s state of mind, and how they are able to learn to embrace life again and attain an inner peace; from feeling like an outsider to becoming a lover of life once more. I wish to express my sincerest appreciation to ADMAF – a thank you that comes from every single survivor since 2012 whose lives have been rebuilt thanks to this outstanding initiative. This empowerment trough art truly resonates with survivors as they come to terms with their experiences of abuse and exploitation.”

The Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that seeks to nurture the arts, education, culture and creativity for the benefit of society and advancement of Abu Dhabi’s cultural vision.
