Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation at Abu Dhabi Art 2016: inspiring collectors and celebrating the nation with The ADMAF Art Collection

Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) will shine a spotlight on UAE artistic practice through The ADMAF Art Collection at Abu Dhabi Art, from 16–19 November. The ADMAF Pavilion hopes to set a leading example to inspire not only artists but also collectors (current and emerging) through The Collection and a programme of free sessions, where Fair visitors and students from many of ADMAF’s university partners will have the chance to be inspired by the leading artists of the UAE’s visual arts sector. The programme kicked off on 14 November with a pre-Fair workshop in partnership with international auction house Sotheby’s. ‘The Art World – An Inside View’ presented by ADMAF at Warehouse421 took a selected group of aspiring arts professionals behind the scenes of the global art market.   Throughout the Abu Dhabi Art Fair, the ADMAF Pavilion comes alive with sessions (see below) where collectors and connoisseurs will meet leading Emiratis artists Khalil Abdul Wahid, Ahmed Al Faresi, Azza Al Qubaisi, Amna Al Dabbagh and Dr. Karima Al Shomaly (the first Emirati woman with a PhD in Fine Art) to find out more about their careers and practice. Emerging artists will also have the chance to have one-to-one mentoring sessions with them as they review their all-important portfolios.

Continuing the call to collect, the ADMAF Pavilion’s focus this year extends far beyond Abu Dhabi Art to the galleries of Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah as the Foundation’s latest exhibition ‘Place and Unity: Works from The ADMAF Art Collection at Maraya Art Centre’ exemplifies the importance of collecting UAE art and demonstrates the significant national legacy a collection can become. The exhibition will be open to the public at Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah until 31 January 2017.

In addition to its nationwide advocacy campaign for Emirati art development and collecting, ADMAF is committed to raising international awareness around the status of Emirati practice. Just recently, ADMAF made an historical first donation of a work by a UAE artist to the National Museum of Women in the Arts, located in Washington DC, USA. Dr Najat Makki’s 2012 work ‘Dream’ now hangs in the only major museum in the world solely dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements in the arts.

Furthering its worldwide mission of cultural diplomacy, the seminal Abu Dhabi Festival 2016 exhibition ‘Portrait of a Nation’ will tour to Europe, opening at the Collectors Room during Berlin Art Week in September 2017.  The exhibition, one of the largest ever of Emirati art featuring 20 commissioned works alongside 30 loaned and gifted pieces, provides an important international platform for 50 Emirati artists and a gateway into the UAE’s cultural identity for visitors.

Commenting on ADMAF’s commitment to the visual arts via The ADMAF Art Collection and other initiatives nationally and internationally, H.E. Hoda Al Khamis-Kanoo, Founder of ADMAF and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival, said: “With the rapid growth of the UAE as a global destination for arts and culture, ADMAF continues its mission to celebrate national artistic talent. This year, ADMAF celebrates its 20th year of nurturing future generations through a broad range of initiatives, and supporting the notion that the true strength of a nation lies in its culture. At ADMAF, we are proud to be strong participants and partners in the ever-evolving cultural landscape, partaking in internationally renowned platforms like Abu Dhabi Art. We believe it is equally important to open the doors of global dialogue with our homegrown visual artists and therefore ADMAF’s caravan of cultural expression continues with the exhibition ‘Portrait of a Nation’ in which the UAE’s visual artists will present their works during Berlin Art Week in Germany.”
