ADWC design students celebrate final year exhibition

Under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology, and with generous support from the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF), senior Applied Communications students at the HCT’s Abu Dhabi Women’s College inaugurated their annual exhibition at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. The tenth annual Desert Rose exhibition, “We Can Do It!” will run from 22-26 May, showcasing the work of seventeen students currently looking forward to their June graduation, many of whom are actively seeking careers in the local media industry. The work on display includes graphic design, video, audio, animation and photography.

This year’s theme “We Can Do It!” represents the students’ belief that following their years of study at ADWC, they are ready to demonstrate the high level of skills that they have learnt in a broad range of formats, from magazine layout to Arabic typography. In developing their skills the students have been ably assisted by ADWC’s outstanding faculty and visiting international guests who conducted various workshops.

H.E. Hoda I Khamis Kanoo, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts foundation said, “The Desert Rose exhibition represents the very best of young Emirati design talent and we’re extremely proud to be associated with this, the 10th edition of the show. ADMAF is also very proud to nurture and support these students as they hope to embark on careers in an increasingly competitive market, I find their talent, confidence and courage inspiring and I believe they should be very proud of themselves for all the hard work that is behind them and all the hard work that lays ahead of them in their chosen careers.”

ADWC Applied Communications students were responsible for planning all aspects of the exhibition, including the floor plan, the gallery itself, and all promotional materials. In addition, they will host a gala reception dinner where members of the media will be invited to cover the event and celebrate the launch of Desert Rose 2011.

Dr. Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology, stated, “This annual event is an appropriate showcase for the work of HCT Applied Communications students. They are to be commended for their creativity, technical knowledge and organizational skills.  The students worked together as teams which inspires cooperation and stimulates creative thinking. I am very proud of these students who are able to accomplish such work and the wonderful projects they highlight in this year’s “Desert Rose” exhibition.”
