Children’s summer camp exhibition proves it’s more than art for Ghaf Gallery

The 2011 Marsam Mattar Summer Art Camp saw all their hard work celebrated last night at the capital's Ghaf Art Gallery. The children's art exhibition was officially opened in the presence of H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan Minister of Education of Higher Education and Scientific Research and President & Patron of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF).
The 'More Than Art' exhibition features artworks by children between the ages of 5 to and 11-years old and was a collaboration between the Dubai-based Marsam Mattar Gallery, ADMAF and the Ghaf Art Gallery. All the work is drawn from Marsam Mattar's summer camp which is held annually to help foster young artistic talent in the UAE. The children, who have all shown a strong interest and affinity with art, are given instruction, and inspiration from a team of artists and teachers led by the Emirati artist Mattar bin Lahej, co-founder of the Marsam Mattar Gallery.
Speaking during the event ADMAF Founder H.E. Mrs Hoda Al Khamis Kanoo said, "I applaud the superb effort that Marsam Mattar and its staff have brought to this exhibition. ADMAF is proud to have supported such an excellent initiative and I would personally like to congratulate all the contributing instructors and teachers. I am confident that we will see a great many of the young artists whose worked is displayed here today in years to come and hope they will continue to follow their dreams and go on to inspire others."
While guests mingled amongst the more than 60 colourful works Mr Bin Lhej applauded the energy of today's youth, "It is a truly wonderful thing to see so much talent on display and to see so many people willing to support and nurture the artistic talent emerging in the UAE today."
He went on to say, "The amazing artwork on display at the More Than Art exhibition is the result of our highly successful 2011 Summer Camp during which the participating young artists attended courses in how to produce mosaics and batiks and learnt techniques on how to draw with sand, how to paint like pop artist Andy Warhol using multiple images."
"They were also taught about photography and calligraphy; they experimented with charcoal and pastels and were taught how to create sculptures out of everyday objects."

The Marsam Mattar Summer Camp Exhibition at the Ghaf Art Gallery in Abu Dhabi is open from 6th - 13th December 2011
