Cuban dance sensation Carlos Acosta dazzles audience with powerful ballet performance at Abu Dhabi Festival

Carlos Acosta, one of the most famous ballet dancers in the world, dazzled the Abu Dhabi Festival audience last night as he made his Arab world debut at the Emirates Palace. Performing with power and grace alongside an outstanding company of young Cuban dancers, the star – himself born in Cuba – performed excerpts from his favourite ballet repertoire, including Swan Lake, Diana and Acteon and Les Bourgeois.

In the first of two very special Abu Dhabi Festival performances, Acosta proved why he is known as one of the greatest male ballet dancers of his generation, compared with legends such as Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. With a career stretching over two decades, Acosta is known for performing on some of the world’s leading stages in iconic ballet roles including Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake and The Prince in The Nutcracker.

From humble beginnings in Cuba, Acosta trained at the Cuban National Ballet School before going global with major international ballet companies, including The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet and the Houston Ballet. Today, as he continues to develop and produce his own hugely popular and award-winning shows, Acosta is deeply committed to discovering and supporting the next generation of young talent. Taking part in Abu Dhabi Festival’s ‘Back To School’ initiative, Acosta will hold a special master class with gifted young dancers from Abu Dhabi during his stay in the capital.

Carlos Acosta and Friends is co-produced by Sadler’s Wells and Valid Productions.

Running until 30 April 2016, Carlos Acosta and Friends (25–26 April) is the final performance in the Abu Dhabi Festival headline programme at Emirates Palace. Seeing out the Festival in style, the much acclaimed Festival Recital Series featuring the Joey Alexander Trio (27 April) and the Alfredo Rodríguez Trio (28 April) will take place at New York University Abu Dhabi Arts Center.
