Grammy-nominated pianist and Quincy Jones protégé delights audience with a masterful evening of jazz virtuosity

Alfredo Rodríguez Trio at Abu Dhabi Festival 30th Apr 2016

Explosive performance by Alfredo Rodríguez brings the 2016 Abu Dhabi Festival Recital Series to a close

Grammy-nominated pianist Alfredo Rodríguez took to the Abu Dhabi Festival stage last night for the second concert in the highly acclaimed ‘Festival Recital Series’. The Cuban-born musician played pieces from his new hit album  Tocororo, delivering a masterful performance inspired as much by the classical works of Bach and Stranvinsky as by his Cuban and jazz roots.

Performing at New York University Abu Dhabi Arts Center alongside drummer Michael Olivera, and bassist Reinier Elizarde - Rodríguez demonstrated why he is described by Quincy Jones as “one of the best young pianists I’ve ever seen”. Known for his ability to connect with his audience by “playing stories”, the Alfredo Rodríguez Trio took the audience on a spirited journey through a series of improvised jazz jams alongside pieces Guantanamera, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and songs from his latest album Tocororo.

Discovered at the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival by Quincy Jones, Rodríguez has since performed on prestigious stages around the world including North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz in Marciac, and Umbria Jazz and Jazz á Vienne. The performance at Abu Dhabi Festival was held in partnership with Quincy Jones Productions and the New York University Abu Dhabi Arts Center.

The 2016 Abu Dhabi Festival will draw to a close on Saturday 30 April with the final day of ‘Festival In The Park’ – a family-friendly arts and music weekend held in Umm Al Emarat Park under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al Nahyan.
