Hollywood Legend Kevin Spacey in Abu Dhabi for Acting Masterclass
The two-time Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey joined students at the Intercontinental Hotel late last week for an acting workshop held by the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF), in collaboration with the Middle East Theatre Academy (META). The charismatic star of American Beauty, The Usual Suspects and Se7en is currently visiting the Gulf region with his acclaimed stage production Richard III with The Old Vic Theatre, and to promote work of the Kevin Spacey Foundation, as well as META, a joint initiative he launched earlier this year alongside Emirati businessman and social entrepreneur Badr Jafar.
Thirty lucky Emirati university students and aspiring actresses participated in the workshop and got to see first-hand why the multi-talented actor has enjoyed such an auspicious career. The actor spent more than two hours coaching the participants on Shakespeare’s Richard III, and giving a unique insight into his own personal process of creating the lead character and the challenges and discoveries inherent, in what will be for many a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Mr. Spacey was joined by fellow Richard III cast member Nathan Darrow, who has considerable experience facilitating these workshops.
ADMAF Founder Mrs Hoda Al Khamis Kanoo congratulated the efforts of the Middle East Theatre Academy that mirror many of ADMAF’s own educational projects, “We’re incredibly honoured to be able to host and work with such an incredible talent as Kevin Spacey. His work through META and The Kevin Spacey Foundation is tireless and an inspiration to everybody who seeks to promote the importance of arts and culture in the educational development of our children and young people.”
The Middle East Theatre Academy is a non-profit initiative designed to “bring theatre to the Middle East”, and nurture emerging talent in the Region’s youth by offering students and emerging actors the opportunity to take part in bespoke workshops led by experienced arts facilitators and Kevin Spacey himself, such as undertaking this special workshop in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with ADMAF.
The Old Vic production of William Shakespeare’s Richard III will take place in Doha’s National Convention Centre on the 16th and 17th December. The play, directed by Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, will feature a cast of highly acclaimed British and American actors and with subtitles provided in Arabic. The play will end its world tour in New York before the play begins its residency at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theatre (BAM).
