Salem Brahimi’s multi-award winning film ‘Let Them Come’ screened at the Abu Dhabi Festival

As part of the Abu Dhabi Festival, film enthusiasts gathered last night for a special screening of ‘Let Them Come,’ the French-Algerian co-production directed by Salem Brahimi, which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2015. The critically acclaimed film is an adaptation of the celebrated novel by Arezki Mellal, who also co-wrote the script. The screening was held in association with Emirates Global Aluminum and in partnership with The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi.

The screening was followed by a panel discussion with the film’s director Salem Brahimi and filmmakers Nujoom Al Ghanem and Alexis Gambis, moderated by Mohannad Al Bakri, Director of External Relations and Partnerships at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi. The audience, which included members of the Abu Dhabi Festival’s Young Filmmakers’ Circle, were treated to an in-depth discussion around the issues of documentary and fiction in filmmaking.

The film portrays Algeria’s ‘dark decade’ of the 1990’s in an intimate drama that details the impact of a devastating war, focusing on a family as they struggle against the rising tide of terror and oppression. The film has been acclaimed as a fantastic piece of Algerian cinema that documents life in Algeria during a time of severe oppression.

The public screening of ‘Let Them Come’ is part of ADMAF’s Young Filmmakers’ Circle. Piloted in 2016, the latest edition has gathered a specially selected group of Emirati and UAE-based emerging filmmakers to develop their filmmaking skills during a year-round programme of screenings, workshops and roundtables with leading industry professionals. As part of this year’s Abu Dhabi Festival, ADMAF Young Filmmakers’ Circle undertook a one-day scriptwriting workshop with writer and director Salem Brahimi today.

The next public screening of the ADMAF’s Young Filmmakers’ Circle will be ‘Abdullah’ by New York Film Academy alumnus Humaid Al Suwaidi, and will take place at 7pm on 17 April at NYUAD Conference Centre.

The Abu Dhabi Festival is presented and organised by Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation. ADMAF is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that seeks to nurture the arts, education, culture and creativity for the benefit of society and advancement of Abu Dhabi’s cultural vision.
