The Gulf Capital – Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts Award 2017 Now Open for Entries

The Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and Gulf Capital invite up and coming Emirati visual artists to take part in The Gulf Capital – Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts Award 2017. The open call invites emerging Emirati visual arts students and practitioners to visit the Festival’s headline exhibition, The Art of Nature, at Umm Al Emarat Park before creating an artwork inspired by the pieces presented to be in with a chance of winning the AED10,000 prize. Registration is open now until 23 April.

Launched at the Abu Dhabi Festival 2013, the Award was established to support the UAE visual arts scene, nurturing the creativity of Emirati students and emerging artists, and encouraging them to experience and be inspired by the Abu Dhabi Festival annual exhibition.

In 2016, the Award was won by emerging Emirati artist, Sara Al Ahbabi, for the photography series, ‘Here’s What They Think of Me?’, which was part of her capstone project at NYU Abu Dhabi. The series of staged images seek to challenge and confront several stereotypical scenarios encountered by the artist in her life, and aim to stimulate debate concerning perceptions of UAE identity. ‘Here’s What They Think of Me?’ is now on display in the Emirates Palace Auditorium Foyer until 31st March.

The Gulf Capital – Abu Dhabi Festival Visual Arts Award was created to support young national talent in creativity and the performing arts, in recognition of outstanding Emirati creativity in the visual arts, performing arts, literature, animation or film. Open to Emirati nationals, the award’s criteria is based on artistic merit, evidence of original and creative thinking and personal application of technical skills.

The Abu Dhabi Festival is presented and organised by Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation. ADMAF is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that seeks to nurture the arts, education, culture and creativity for the benefit of society and advancement of Abu Dhabi’s cultural vision.
