Visual Art exhibition by Ewa’a and ADMAF opens with great success, and gives survivors of human trafficking a voice of their own

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, ADMAF’s Honourable Patron, visitors led by H.E. Hoda I. Al Khamis - Kanoo, Founder of Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and H.E. Sara Shuhail, CEO, Ewa’a Shelters for Women & Children, experienced the fruits of a pioneering art project last night as over 50 unique artworks by survivors of human trafficking were unveiled to the public. Created during a six-month series of arts workshops for women residents of Ewa’a Shelters in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, all proceeds from the sale of pieces will provide additional support for Ewa’a. The emotive expression behind the art moved the packed Ghaf Art Gallery crowd and several pieces were sold to viewers impressed by the raw emotive expression behind each and every work.

This is the second edition of the innovative partnership initiative ‘Silent Voices’ which aims to raise awareness around the issue of human trafficking, contribute to the rehabilitation process of survivors while strengthening ADMAF’s commitment to social development and humanitarian endeavour.

H.H. Sheikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, ADMAF’s Honourable Patron, spoke about the event: “Through the arts, we see the important role that creativity can play as part of the rehabilitation process. The proceeds from the sale of artworks will go to support the shelters that receive the survivors of human trafficking and help them embark upon the road to recovery. ‘Silent Voices II’ eloquently advocates the value of the arts in community life and in the life of every individual. As a tool, the arts not only have a beneficial impact upon personal development but it also nurtures the creative spirit within. Through this activity, we recognise and appreciate the importance of collaboration between non-profit organisations and their collective role in community development.”

Founded in 2009, the Ewa'a Shelters for Women and Children are located in Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah and has given refuge to 190 women and children, helping them embark upon the road to recovery. The centres offer medical, legal and psychological care to those seeking to escape the brutality of human trafficking in the UAE.

Silent Voices is at Ghaf Art Gallery, Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, Abu Dhabi, and runs until Thursday May 16. Opening hours are 10am – 9pm.
